YYC for Women exists to serve the Women’s Centre of Calgary.
The Women’s Centre of Calgary is a non-profit organization located in Calgary, Alberta. The centre exists to serve vulnerable Calgarian women by providing everything from basic needs to legal help.
The services of the Women’s Centre of Calgary cater to women of diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. This includes those suffering from the following:
- Poverty and hunger
- Family breakdown
- Homelessness
- Unemployment
- Domestic violence and discrimination
- Isolation and loneliness
The services offered by the Women’s Centre of Calgary include the following:
- Emergency food packages
- Basic personal care items such as soap, toothpaste, pads, and condoms
- Parenting help
- Immigration and settlement information
- Free legal advice
- Referrals for free or low cost services and agencies related to:
- Housing
- Haircuts
- Employment assistance
- Education
- Recreation

In this same spirit of women-helping-women (with one male ally), YYC for Women was established.
Our humble team of four is comprised of University of Calgary students studying rhetorical communication with an emphasis on online environments. Our mentor, Dr. Tania Smith, is a University of Calgary professor in the field of rhetorical communications and uses much of her expert knowledge as a leader of Thyroid Patients Canada.
Using her work with Thyroid Patients Canada as a model, we were tasked with selecting a Canadian non-profit organization to support and put our rhetorical knowledge to the test. This was a way for us to make our classroom real life and our course work community service.
As witnesses to the amazing work the Women’s Centre of Calgary is doing in our city, we were eager to choose them as our focus.
Our role as a student-led group is to highlight the efforts of the Women’s Centre of Calgary and to encourage donations to support vulnerable women in our city.

As our mission is to increase donations to this vital organization, we will be harnessing our knowledge of website design and social media management to communicate the needs of the Women’s Centre of Calgary. You can find suggested donations lists here and here.
As University of Calgary students, we are also committed to research; therefore, we post regularly about subjects related to vulnerable women in our city, such as menstruation, domestic violence, and job interviews. Check out our blog feed.
